Honduras
WHAT WE DO
Alleviating poverty in Honduras.
"End poverty in all its forms everywhere."
United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #1: No Poverty
"Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment, and decent work for all."
UN Sustainable Development Goal #8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Despite some economic growth in recent years, about 48.3 percent of Hondurans (around 4.3 million people) live below the national poverty line, of whom about two million people live in extreme poverty.
The quality of life in Honduras reflects a profound and widening gap between those living in urban and those in remote and rural communities that impact families across the spectrum of moderate to extreme poverty. Disparities are most evident in people’s ability to access essential services such as electricity, clean water, sanitation, and the Internet. Jobs are harder to come by in rural areas, and improvement in income equality has remained stagnant. Inequality in rural areas has increased while declining in urban areas.
Opportunity’s work in Honduras empowers marginalized families living in poverty by providing access to financial services and business training to build capacity, increase incomes, support their families, and create jobs for neighbours.
