As we enter the second week of Advent, we pause to reflect on the profound gift of peace. This peace is not simply the absence of conflict; it is a resilient strength that emerges in the face of life’s storms.

Iveth’s story of resilience
Take Iveth for example. I met Iveth at her modest roadside snack stand near a bustling bus terminal and market in Nicaragua. Her stand offers homemade drinks, baked goods, and snacks to commuters and locals alike. This vibrant location has proven to be the ideal setting for her venture, allowing her to engage with her community while supporting her family.
Iveth’s journey began out of necessity. About five years prior, she found herself facing significant challenges—unemployed and struggling to care for her two young children and her husband, who required dialysis multiple times a week. Facing this adversity, Iveth discovered an opportunity through ASODENIC, our local partner in Nicaragua. She started her snack stand with a small loan, beginning with a few buckets of supplies and a vision for a brighter future.
Over time, Iveth’s business has grown substantially. She’s expanded her menu to include various drinks, pastries, and snacks, making her stand a popular choice for local passersby. Her income has allowed her to make important investments, such as purchasing a bike to reduce transportation costs. Despite the financial strain of her husband’s medical treatments and her children’s educational needs, Iveth has managed her finances wisely, consistently meeting her repayment obligations.
Iveth attributes much of her success to the training and mentorship she received through ASODENIC. She learned how to budget, plan, and manage her business’s growth. This guidance, combined with her unwavering commitment, has transformed her family’s living conditions. She’s been able to renovate their home from a simple zinc structure to a solid concrete house, providing her family with a stable and secure environment.
Looking to the future, Iveth dreams of expanding her snack stand into a full fast-food business, envisioning a menu that includes local favorites like pupusas and complete meals. She believes this is a natural next step, given the high foot traffic in her location.
With continued support and her determination, Iveth is confident she can grow her business further, setting an inspiring example of resilience for her children and community.
