The power of investing in women cannot be overstated. When a woman is given the opportunity to thrive, she does not rise alone—she lifts her family, strengthens her community, and propels economic progress forward. Yet, for millions of women around the world, the path to financial stability remains blocked by barriers they did not create and cannot dismantle alone.
According to the United Nations, 383 million women and girls globally live in extreme poverty, compared with 368 million men and boys. They shoulder the responsibility of caring for their families but often lack the resources to meet even the most basic needs. No mother should ever have to wonder how she will put food on the table, clothe her children, or send them to school.
In regions like sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, women disproportionately face barriers to financial services. These obstacles are not a reflection of their ability or ambition—but of circumstances beyond their control, including where they were born and their gender. No one should be denied the chance to build a better future because of these factors. That is why investing in women is central to our vision of a world where every person has the opportunity to break free from poverty.
By equipping women with financial tools, training, and support, we are not just providing them with resources—we are unlocking their potential. A woman empowered with both resilience and opportunity can transform her own life and change the future of her family for generations to come.
Resilience: A Foundation for Lasting Change
Resilience is more than the ability to endure hardship—it is the strength to rise, adapt, and build a future despite overwhelming challenges. Women in poverty face countless obstacles, from economic instability to social limitations, yet time and again, with support and training, they demonstrate remarkable resilience that becomes a powerful force for change.
Here are just some of the ways we help build resilience in the lives of the women we serve:
- Building financial literacy through savings groups. When women understand finances—how to budget, invest, and plan for the future—they gain control over their lives. Savings groups do more than provide financial access; they create a support system where women learn together, save together, and grow together. With financial literacy and access to capital, women can launch businesses, cover school fees, and break the cycle of poverty for good.
- Strengthening climate resilience and increasing food security. Women are the backbone of agriculture, yet too often, they lack the training and resources to grow successful businesses. By equipping women farmers with financial support and training on good agricultural practices—including irrigation and climate-resilient crops—we help them grow more, earn more, and secure food for their families. When women farmers thrive, entire communities reap the benefits.
- Providing socio-economic support for women in ultra-poverty. Women living in ultra-poverty require more than financial assistance; they need holistic support that addresses their unique social and economic barriers. By offering tailored programs that provide training, mentorship, and life skills coaching, we help women build self-confidence and develop the skills needed to care for their families and create sustainable livelihoods.
Opportunity: Unlocking Potential and Breaking Barriers
Where a woman is born or the societal norms she faces, should never determine her future. Women have the potential, the drive, and the dreams to succeed—but too often, what they lack is opportunity. With the right support, they can build businesses, strengthen their communities, and create lasting change. When we invest in women, we unlock their potential, allowing them to shape their own futures with dignity.
That is why we focus on breaking barriers and expanding opportunities through:
- Increasing access to capital through microfinance. Lack of access to capital is one of the greatest obstacles women face in their pursuit of economic stability. Through microfinance, we provide small loans that enable women to start and grow businesses, generate income, and invest in their families’ futures. These loans are more than just financial assistance—they represent a chance for women to take control of their lives, build a sustainable livelihood, and contribute to their local economies.
- Removing barriers to financial inclusion. Financial inclusion ensures women have the tools to build sustainable livelihoods, make informed choices, and secure a better future for their families. It ensures that every woman, regardless of her background or circumstances, has the tools to build a better life. This can include loans to start and grow businesses or a secure place to save to ensure stability. In today’s digital world, we leverage mobile technology to bring financial services to even the most remote and underserved areas, bridging the gap and expanding opportunities for more women. Marginalized no more, these women can take control of their own future.
A woman empowered with resilience and opportunity is a force of transformation. She lifts not only herself but her entire community. When we remove the barriers that stand in her way, we create a world where every woman has the chance to rise.
Together, we can see poverty alleviated in our lifetime and build a future where opportunity is within reach for all.
