As we enter the season of Advent, we find ourselves in a unique and profound time of waiting. This season invites us to pause, reflect, and anticipate the promise of something greater that is in store.

In seasons of waiting, we are reminded that hope often resides in the spaces between our current reality and our dreams for the future.

At Opportunity International Canada (OIC), we recognize that many individuals living in poverty are in their own seasons of waiting—waiting for a chance to improve their health and well-being, waiting for the resources to provide an education and better life for their children, and waiting for the stability that comes with meeting their basic needs, such as access to clean water, nutritious food, and safe shelter.

For many, hope is rekindled the moment opportunity arises—a spark that bridges the gap between hardship and the possibility of a brighter future.

Yovanis’ journey is a powerful example of this transformation.

Yovanis’ journey of hope through opportunity

I remember climbing the long, steep hill formed by heaps of waste to the La María neighborhood of Cartagena. This was a hill that 55-year-old Yovanis climbed every day, and as I made the ascent in the sweltering 35-degree Celsius heat, I quickly realized the physical challenge it posed. Yet, every day, Yovanis climbed it with hope and determination, motivated by her desire to provide a better life for her family.

As a single mother caring for her three grandchildren, Yovanis has faced unimaginable challenges, particularly with one of her grandsons who had a triple disability—physical, motor, and visual.

Surviving on the meager resources available to her, Yovanis engaged in various activities to put food on the table. She recycled materials, sold coffee and sweets on the streets, and, at times, even resorted to begging to make ends meet.

The struggle was further compounded by the financial burden of her grandson’s medical needs, which required expensive procedures that seemed out of reach. Yet, amid these hardships, Yovanis held onto an unwavering hope that her circumstances could change.

One fateful day, while climbing the steep hill to her home, Yovanis crossed paths with facilitators from Agape’s Ultra-Poverty Graduation Program. After hearing about the program and what it could offer, Yovanis decided to participate—a pivotal moment that would change the trajectory of her life. This opportunity unlocked the hope within her, allowing her to realize her dreams.

For years, Yovanis had envisioned owning her grocery store, a dream fueled by the desire to generate a sustainable income that could cover her grandson’s medical treatments. With the support of the program, she received seed capital to launch her own business.

Today, her dream has become a reality. Yovanis has established her grocery store, a place that not only provides for her family but also serves as a vital resource for her community.

The transformation in Yovanis’ life is nothing short of remarkable. With her newfound business, she has gained financial independence and stability. More importantly, she now believes more than ever that she is on the path to well-being, equipped with the tools and resources to build a brighter future for herself and her grandchildren.

Yovanis’ story embodies the essence of what it means to unlock hope through opportunity.

Her journey serves as an inspiring reminder that, with support and determination, individuals can overcome adversity and transform their lives.

This Advent, we not only celebrate the hope that this season brings but also acknowledge the active role we play in unlocking opportunities for those we serve. Together, we can turn our collective waiting into meaningful action that transforms lives, one hopeful dream at a time.
