When I think about the fight against global poverty, I often find myself coming back to the stories of the people I’ve met along the way—women, men, mothers, and fathers who have faced unimaginable challenges yet hold onto hope for a better future. Their resilience and determination remind me why this work matters, and why it’s worth investing in the transformative power of opportunity.

At Opportunity International Canada, we believe poverty isn’t inevitable. It’s a cycle that can be broken with the right support. But I know some may ask, “Why focus on global poverty? Aren’t there enough challenges to address here at home?”

Why Global Poverty?

The truth is poverty isn’t just a local issue; it’s a global challenge that impacts all of us. Widespread poverty contributes to instability, with ripple effects that touch everything from migration to economic security.

Beyond global consequences, the fight against poverty is a matter of justice. The circumstances of someone’s birth—their “postal code lottery”—should not determine their future. Yet for millions, poverty is an inescapable reality tied to systemic barriers like race, gender, or caste. Women, in particular, face immense obstacles, often left on the margins of society.

These individuals are no different from us. The words of our late founder, David Stiller, resonate with me so deeply, “Any misapprehension on my part-that those living in such difficult circumstances might somehow hurt less because their lives were filled with so many trials-melted away. Their pain was no less acute than mine.” (The Circle of Opportunity)

It puts the question “Who is you neighbour?” from the parable of The Good Samaritan, into a global perspective.

At Opportunity International Canada, our mission is grounded in the belief in the inherent dignity of every life. We see every person as valuable and deserving of the chance to realize their potential. By extending opportunity, we honour that dignity, empowering individuals to transform their lives and create a future filled with hope.

The people we serve have dreams for their children, aspirations for their futures, and the potential to thrive.
The difference is opportunity.

The Power of Opportunity

The progress we’ve seen is built on a simple but profound idea: when we invest in people and provide them with tools to succeed, they lift themselves out of poverty. This isn’t about charity—it’s about empowerment.

Take the story of a woman in northern Ghana who received a microloan to buy seeds and tools for her farm. With access to credit, she expanded her business, increased her income, and sent her children to school. Her success didn’t stop there. She hired workers from her community, creating jobs and spreading opportunity to others.

This ripple effect is what makes livelihood development so powerful. When one person is empowered to build a sustainable livelihood, their success impacts their family, their community, and future generations.

Microfinance is just one example of the tools we use. Financial literacy, education, and agricultural support are others. Each of these investments equips individuals to adapt to challenges and create long-term solutions for themselves and their families.

Why Now?

Global poverty can feel overwhelming when you look at the numbers—more than 700 million people live on less than $2.15 a day. But I’ve seen firsthand that change is possible, and it starts with small steps.

One of the most compelling reasons to invest in livelihood development as a solution to global poverty, is the incredible impact every dollar can have. In low-income countries, even modest resources can transform lives and bring about community-level change. Financial literacy alone is a game-changer, empowering people with the knowledge to make informed decisions even in the face of challenges.

And let’s not forget, those living in poverty are among the most resilient and hardworking people you’ll ever meet. Microloans have repayment rates in the high 90s because clients are determined to succeed.

The Moral Imperative

For me, this work is deeply personal. Those of us who have much have a responsibility to help those with little.

People in poverty aren’t looking for handouts. They want a hand up—a chance to realize their potential and provide for their families. At Opportunity International Canada, that’s exactly what we aim to provide: dignity, transformation, and sustainable change.

The Ripple Effect of Change

One of the most inspiring things about this work is witnessing the ripple effect of opportunity.

A farmer increases her yield and hires her neighbors.

A small business owner expands her shop and sends her children to school.

These successes don’t just change individual lives—they transform entire communities.

I’ve seen it time and again, and it’s why I’m confident we’re on the right path. The road out of poverty is long, but progress is happening.

As we look toward 2025 and beyond, our commitment remains unwavering. We will continue to walk alongside the most marginalized, providing them with the tools to break free from poverty and build a better future.

The journey isn’t easy, but it’s worth every step.

Together, we can create lasting, sustainable change—and a world where opportunity is within reach for everyone.
