WHAT WE DO

Empowering smallholder farmers on their journey from hunger to harvest.

At Opportunity International Canada, we recognize that agriculture finance is a cornerstone in the fight against poverty. Currently, three-quarters of the world’s poorest individuals reside in rural regions in countries like Ghana and Malawi, relying on agriculture for their livelihoods. Among this group, women smallholder farmers constitute more than 40% of the agricultural workforce. Despite their critical role, they face significant obstacles, including lack of access to financing, markets, and the training necessary for success.

Through tailored programs, Opportunity equips farmers with microfinance to invest in seeds, fertilizer, and equipment that increase crop yields and improve food security for their communities. Training in modern farming techniques and sustainable practices empowers farmers to enhance productivity while protecting their land and resources. Additionally, Opportunity’s support in digital financial services allows farmers to access real-time weather and farming information, training, as well as apply for and repay loans.

By building climate resilience, farmers are better prepared to withstand droughts, floods, and other environmental shifts, securing their livelihoods and increasing food security. Increased incomes allow families to invest in essentials like education, healthcare, and safer housing, which creates ripple effects throughout the community.

When smallholder farmers thrive, their families and communities flourish, lifting entire regions out of poverty and paving the way for long-term progress and prosperity.
