It rarely arrives with fanfare.
More often, hope begins quietly — in a single conversation, a determined step, or the belief that life can be different than it is today.
I have seen it in the eyes of farmers tending their fields after a season of uncertainty. In mothers determined to build a better life for their children. In communities that cling to possibility even when the world overlooks them.
It is the spark of hope.
Hope becomes transformation when someone chooses to invest in it. Year after year, people like you choose to stay, to invest, and to trust that opportunity can take root even in the hardest places.
That simple act is where real change begins. It is where hope turns into opportunity, and opportunity turns into lives transformed.
As another year ends, I am struck by a truth that has shaped everything we do at Opportunity International Canada (OIC): Hope takes root when people refuse to walk away.
Global poverty is complex. It is not simply a lack of resources; it is a lack of opportunity. And when opportunity is present, people rise. They build, they adapt, they protect their families, and they shape their futures with dignity and resilience.
That conviction has guided OIC for years. We do not believe in quick fixes or temporary solutions. We believe in empowering people with innovative microfinance solutions, training, and the support they need to create lasting change that strengthens families for generations. This year, you showed what it looks like to stand firmly in that belief.
A Year Marked by Partnership and Impact
In 2025, thanks to your commitment, we expanded our reach significantly. More families gained access to financial services and moved beyond hardship to lasting change.
This was not charity. This was partnership. It was people like you investing in opportunity and walking alongside families who are working to build stable, hopeful futures. It’s not about a hand-out, nor even a hand-up, but rather a handshake, steeped in dignity.
And, because you refused to walk away, transformation is taking place.
CLIMB
In Northern Ghana, smallholder farmers are deepening their resilience in the face of climate unpredictability. Through training, financial tools, and climate smart agriculture, they strengthened their fields, their finances and their futures. What could have been a story of loss became a story of adaptation and growth.
Delivered in partnership with Global Affairs Canada and our long-standing partner Sinapi Aba, CLIMB equips farmers with the tools and knowledge they need to build climate resilient livelihoods for years to come.
This is what opportunity looks like in action.
WE CARE
Through established microfinance networks, Community Health Workers in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal are reaching families with essential knowledge and support, especially women, mothers, and young children. When households receive both economic tools and health resources, stability takes root.
Also delivered in partnership with Global Affairs Canada, WE CARE brings together financial inclusion and community led health initiatives. Families are becoming stronger, safer, and more self-reliant.
A Growing Community of Champions
Impact abroad is only possible because of the commitment here at home.
Through initiatives like our President’s Circle, leaders across Canada have become the backbone of our mission. They offer not only resources, but wisdom, perspective, and a deep sense of shared purpose. Their partnership is accelerating major projects, opening new opportunities, and strengthening our long-term vision.
Expanding Trust Groups
In homes across the country, Trust Groups are growing in number and influence. These circles are not simply donors; they are advocates. They connect, share stories, build awareness, invite others in, and embody a belief we hold deeply: when people come together, solutions become possible.
Walking People Out of Poverty
This year, we witnessed something remarkable: people who did not just give but moved. They put their feet on the pavement, gathered their communities, and walked in solidarity with families who are working every day for a more stable future.
Our Walking People Out of Poverty campaign became a powerful expression of what partnership looks like when it becomes personal. Dozens stepped forward this year, and hundreds more joined them as donors, cheerleaders, and champions. Each one said, in their own way, “I refuse to walk away.”
Among the inspiring groups who led the charge, the Quark Group stood out in extraordinary ways. Employees across their corporate office and 45 retail stores nationwide came together to make their steps count. They mobilized colleagues, engaged customers, raised funds, and turned a simple walk into a bold statement of hope, showing what is possible when a community rallies behind a cause bigger than itself.
Through their efforts, more than $68,000 was raised, and thousands more families will gain access to opportunities that strengthen livelihoods, improve health, and build resilience.
This movement was not just about kilometers covered; it was about lives changed.
When people here take steps, families around the world can take steps forward too.
Why Refusing to Walk Away Matters More Than Ever
Poverty is complex – shaped by conflict, climate, economic instability, and systemic barriers. But complexity is never an excuse for indifference. In fact, it is the very reason we must stay.
Every time you choose to engage – whether through giving, advocacy, fundraising, or community – you become part of an effort to end global poverty.
This year, because you stayed:
- More women started or expanded businesses
- More farmers strengthened their livelihoods
- More families gained access to health resources
- More children received quality education
- More communities became resilient
Every statistic is a person. Every person has a story. And many stories changed for the better because someone like you refused to walk away.
Looking Ahead with Purpose
The challenges we face globally are significant, and they are not going away. But neither is our commitment.
As we move into a new year, we remain grounded in this simple conviction…Opportunity is powerful. Partnership is powerful. But hope, lived out through action, is what changes the story.
Thank you for standing with us, for investing in possibility, and for believing in the strength and dignity of every person we serve. Because you refused to walk away, families today are stepping into a future shaped by opportunity, resilience, and renewed hope.
May the year ahead be one marked by deeper partnership, greater transformation, and hope that continues to rise.
