Loan Use: Fried Foods and Homemade Juices
Luz Maria Atencia is passionate about building a better life for her family. “When I fled Bolivar, Colombia, I escaped with my five children and nothing more. It was not just a home and cows that we lost. We ran for our lives, leaving behind my brother and cousin, killed by guerillas who stalked house to house, murdering senselessly.” And thus began Luz’s journey in search of a new life.
Luz arrived to the slums of Cartagena with her husband, children and the promise of a government home. When the guaranteed housing fell through, Luz took on jobs cleaning houses, and her husband picked up odd jobs, enabling them to build a modest shelter. Just when every effort led to a dead-end and the future was looking bleak, Luz heard about Opportunity Colombia.
The future looks bright for the Atencia family. Today, Luz operates a bustling business, selling fried foods and homemade juices from her kitchen. Her business, called Sabrosura (translates “Delicious”), has become a favorite spot among locals. “When I first met my Opportunity loan officer, I literally had nothing. Now, our income has grown to almost $40 a day. I have truly become a provider.” The industrious couple has also created jobs for three people in the community. Luz says she is grateful and gives thanks for what they have accomplished by working hard together. “I have faith in God and I have Opportunity to help direct me.”
