What if you could go back in time and experience something for the first time as a 12 year old? 12 year olds don't realize all that's ahead of them; they don't know what they don't know. They are much more innocent and receptive.
At 12 we can hear, see and feel the world around us through our hearts.
I am excited to see Opportunity International's work in Nicaragua with my 12 year old son, Elijah. On April 17, 2017, Elijah and I will experience first-hand the transformation happening with the working poor as they are empowered to work their way out of poverty through compassionate capital (micro loans and training). Elijah has never been outside Canada or the US and I can't wait to share this experience with him. Although he hasn't seen as much of the world as I have, he has a heart that is open and receptive and that is what I need from him.
I joined Opportunity largely because it makes great business sense. I am passionate about the good news of Opportunity and how it changes lives. But as so many of you know,
Opportunity is not just about good business sense; it is about heart sense.
Giving back is a matter of the heart. The transformational impact I have experienced is above and beyond the great business sense of our work; it is the heart of our people (our donors, clients and partners) that inspires and drives me.
I have had the privilege of hosting Juan (Executive Director of our Nicaraguan country partner) and his wife Ivania in Alberta for our luncheon in 2015. Now, as the Director of Philanthropy (Alberta), I am excited to be hosted by them in their country. I am excited to connect with Juan and Ivania and our clients, to see, hear and feel the amazing work of Opportunity.
My heart is open and receptive to hear stories of transformation and to be transformed.
Finally, on this trip, I will have the privilege to learn from Opportunity teammate Jamie Hubick (Victoria). I will be shadowing and learning from a passionate and skilled story teller. Opportunity staff are so talented, passionate and generous. I can't wait to learn from the best! Thanks for sharing this journey with us.
Stay tuned, we will post an update in our next newsletter.
