April 2017 Newsletter

by Opportunity International Canada

Welcome to our early spring edition of our newsletter.  A lot is happening across Canada, and I hope you will take the time to go through and read each article featured below. When Dale thinks about both spring and Easter, he thinks about the lives of Opportunity clients. For so many of the remarkable entrepreneurs with whom we work, life can often feel like one long, endless winter and because of so many circumstances resulting from extreme poverty, life for many of them feels hopeless. Spring is a Season of Possibility

by Dale Patterson, President and CEO

There is a moment each spring when you can feel the weather turn. When all of a sudden the sun is shining and the air is barely-warm. And each year at this time I think the same thing: yes, we made it through another winter. We made it through those months of short days and cold nights, when the snow was piled high and now we can look forward to brighter days when the trees turn from brown to green, and the flowers will appear. Spring is a season of possibility.  In the same way, I reflect upon…

Reflections from Travelling

by Andrew MacDonald

In March 2017 I had the opportunity of spending 10 days meeting with Opportunity clients and staff in Nicaragua and Honduras.  Along with me was my faithful sidekick, Allison, and together we were inspired by the amazing stories of our clients as they seized the spark of possibility and made their dreams a reality.  I've been back for a few weeks now and wanted to take a moment to share my thoughts on this trip in the short video message below. You might also want to check out some of the pictures on…

St.John's Vancouver Anglican Church Brings Hope to Malawi

by Doris Olafsen

St. John's Vancouver Anglican Church, The Anglican Diocese of the Upper Shire in Malawi and Opportunity International Canada partner to bring hope to those living in chronic poverty in Malawi.  In December 2016, a dream moved from concept to reality. The dream? To partner together to deliver financial literacy training, access to small loans and training opportunities for parishioners in Malawi. At a virtual meeting held in March, members from St. John’s Vancouver heard directly from Richard Chongo,…

The Heart of the Matter

by Ed Temple

What if you could go back in time and experience something for the first time as a 12 year old? 12 year olds don't realize all that's ahead of them; they don't know what they don't know. They are much more innocent and receptive. At 12 we can hear, see and feel the world around us through our hearts. I am excited to see Opportunity International's work in Nicaragua with my 12 year old son, Elijah. On April 17, 2017, Elijah and I will experience first-hand the transformation happening with the working…

Fun, Philanthropy and Fashion!

by Alison Chapman

On April 7 and 8, two of our fabulous supporters in Toronto, Lisa Morgan-Long and fashion stylist Rinat Samuel, teamed up to host a beautiful ‘Drop and Shop’ fundraising event. Women donated their ‘high end’ nearly new or never worn clothes to a ‘boutique’ set up in Lisa’s home, and when the doors opened Rinat was there to style the women shopping. Lisa has had a vision for this event for a couple of years, and due to an amazing team of volunteers, this year she made it happen! More…

Welcome to our first in a new series of newsletters.  Through this series, we want to share with you the inspiring stories of our clients and donors as well as information about upcoming events that might interest you.  March 8th is International Women's Day which makes this a great time to be sending our first newsletter. Edmonton All-Stars

by Ed Temple

ABOVE: Craig Kalvin catching up with Gerald Orozco (CEO of ASPIRE and our guest speaker) I recently had the opportunity to get to know Craig and Chelsea Kalvin. They were our key partners to make an Edmonton luncheon successful in early November. Craig found our amazing venue (Art Gallery of Alberta) for the luncheon and he put in a tremendous amount of work to help make this event a huge success. In case you had not heard we had over 60 people attend (photos found here) and raised almost $10,000.…
